Organ Donation Awareness for Social Work Students of SDNB Vaishnav College

  • MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness program on organ donation for the First-year students of Social Work of SDNB Vaishnav College using the Zoom platform on 14th December 2020. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Ms. Ishwarya and Mr. Siva Shankar from the Foundation were the speakers. The session was organised by Ms. Esther, Head of Department, Social Work, and around 15 students participated.

    The session began with Dr. Hemal Kanvinde explaining the genesis and activities of MOHAN Foundation and how the first donor card was introduced to the public by actor and activist, Ms. Revathi. She went on to explain the organ scarcity in the country, the need for organ donation, the national helpline number which is run by MOHAN Foundation to provide information to people on organ donation.

    Concepts of organ donation and transplantation, including the below, were explained in detail by Ms. Ishwarya.

    • Main causes of organ failure
    • Types of Donors
    • Brain death, functions of brain stem and causes of brain death
    • Age criteria in organ donation
    • Time factor in organ donation
    • Transplant law
    • Transplant waiting list and organ allocation
    • Organ donation statistics – domestic and international

    She also gave information about hand and uterus transplants.

    Mr. Siva Shankar took over the session with a quiz on the movies that had content related to organ donation and transplantation to help the students relate easily to the concepts explained. He highlighted movies that dealt with lung and liver transplantation and organ trading and trafficking.

    The last segment by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde focused on the role of transplant coordinators in the donation and transplantation related activities in hospitals. Counseling the family members, paperwork filled out, coordination with recipient hospitals were a few points that were also explained.

    The following were a few questions answered:

    • Can COVID recovered patients be organ donors?
    • Is living donation safe?
    • What are the potential risks to living donors?
    • Can people living with diabetes sign up as organ donors?
    • Why are underweight people advised against blood donation?
    • Is it possible to transplant the brain?

    The session ended with a vote of thanks from the audience and a group photo.
