Organ Donation Awareness at Sonar Seva Mahasangh, Nagpur

  • On January 19th 2020, Mr. Rameshrab Harsh, Treasurer of Sonar Seva Mahasangh in Chatrapati Nagar, Nagpur extended an invitation to Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Director of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur to speak on organ donation and transplantation. The programme was held at Vidarbha Hindi Sahitya Sammilani in Burdi, Nagpur.

    The programme began by 4 pm with an introduction by Mr. Harsh and around 60 participants attended it. Dr. Wankhede, in his talk introduced MOHAN Foundation, the work it does and explained about organ and tissue donation. He presented in detail, a wide range of topics, including the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, listing the offences and penalties related to malpractices in organ donation.

    The following topics were discussed in detail:

    • What is organ failure and its causes?
    • Who can donate organs?
    • When can organs be donated?
    • What is living donation?
    • Natural death and brain death
    • Brain death and coma
    • Age criteria to donate organs
    • What is the time period to donate organs?
    • Myths and misconceptions around organ donation
    • How to register as an organ donor?
    • What is the role of hospitals in organ donation?

    Dr. Wankhede also answered questions raised by the audience. 15 participants registered as organ donors and received their donor cards. MOHAN Foundation is thankful for the opportunity.
