Organ Donation Awareness at Be Well Hospital, Chennai

  • MOHAN Foundation was invited by Mr. B. Prabudoss, COO of the Be Well Hospital in TNagar, Chennai to deliver an awareness talk on organ donation for the staff of the hospital's corporate office on 9th July 2019. Dr. Hemal Kavinde, Quality Assurance Officer of MOHAN Foundation and Susmitha Gurung, Intern from MMM College of Health Sciences were present at the session which was attended by around 35 hospital staff.

     

    Ms. Angeline Roveena, Medical Social Worker welcomed the audience. Dr. C.J. Vetrivel - Managing Director, Dr. Rukkyal Fatima, Dr. Kamaraj and Ms. Mahalakshmi participated in the awareness program and Dr. Vetrivel also felicitated Dr. Hemal.

     

    Brochures and green ribbon were distributed among the hospital staff before the talk began. A video of a kidney recipient sharing her transplant journey was played to the audience. Dr. Hemal then interacted with the hospital staff and asked a few questions regarding organ donation. Following this she spoke on the following topics:

     

    • Organ donation – what, why, when and how
    • Types of organ donation
    • Organs that can be donated
    • Time required to transplant organs after donation
    • Brain death and its causes
    • Laws on organ donation and transplantation
    • Myths and facts related to organ donation
    • Donor card
    • Helpline number of MOHAN Foundation
    • Helpline number of the Sankara Nethralaya Eye Bank (for those who want to donate their corneas after death)

     

    The following are a few questions the participants had after the session:

     

    • Who can donate organs?
    • What are the organs that can be donated when we are alive?
    • Can diabetic people donate organs?
    • Can alcoholics donate their organs?
    • Is family's consent more important than a donor card during an actual donation?

     

    A video explaining brain death and its implication on organ donation by Dr. Sandeep Vaishya, a Neurosurgeon was played as the session concluded. 

     

    Around 23 people came forward to register as organ donors and received their donor cards.
