  • On December 3, 2025, an impactful Organ Donation Awareness Session was conducted at Bharati Vidyapeeth New Law College in collaboration with Sassoon General Hospital. The objective of the session was to educate law students about the significance, legal framework, and humanitarian value of organ and tissue donation.

The session featured three key speakers—Ms. Pranjali Wagh, Ms. Jaya Jayram, and Mr. Survase—who together delivered a comprehensive and enriching awareness program.

The event began with a warm welcome by the college.
Ms. Pranjali Wagh opened the session by introducing the concept of organ donation, explaining the difference between living and deceased donation, and describing the organs and tissues that can be donated, such as kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, corneas, skin, and bone. She explained the concept of brain death, how it is medically and legally certified, and clarified that it is an irreversible condition. She also addressed myths and misconceptions that cause hesitation among people, reassuring students that organ donation is a scientifically guided, ethically governed, and life-saving act capable of helping multiple recipients.

Following this, Ms. Jaya Jayram discussed the legal framework under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA). She explained how the law regulates the entire transplantation process, protects donor rights, and ensures ethical practices. She highlighted the vital role of transplant coordinators and the sensitivity required when approaching families. Through real-life case experiences from Sassoon General Hospital, she illustrated how organ donation brings hope to recipients and provides comfort and meaning to donor families.

Mr. Survase then shared insights into the practical challenges surrounding organ donation in India, particularly in government hospitals where patients often wait long periods for transplants. He emphasized the growing need for donation and encouraged students to become ambassadors for change by initiating conversations at home and within their communities. He reiterated that one donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and benefit many more through tissue donation.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, during which students raised thoughtful questions about eligibility, donor cards, family consent, religious perspectives, organ allocation, and hospital protocols. The speakers addressed each query with clarity, helping students develop a deeper and well-informed understanding of the process. Many students expressed that the session dispelled their fears and significantly changed their perspective on organ donation.

Overall, the awareness program was highly successful. It not only educated students but also encouraged responsible thinking and motivated them to support organ donation as an important social responsibility. The collaboration between Bharati Vidyapeeth New Law College and Sassoon General Hospital proved meaningful, offering students accurate information, real-life insights, and an inspiring vision of how organ and tissue donation can transform lives.
