Organ Donation Awareness Program - Acharya Institute of Management Studies

  • MOHAN Foundation – Bangalore, in coordination with the Social Work Department of Acharya Institute of Management Studies organized an Organ Donation Awareness Program for its students. The program was held at the Institute’s campus on 29th October 2011. A group of 60 students attended the program. The aim of the program was to assess the knowledge of the students on Organ Donation and also to provide the right information on the same.

     

     

    As a part of the program, a survey was conducted prior to the session and the result of survey were as follows: Out of the 60 students who had attended the survey, 40% were aware that organs could be donated during life and after death, whereas 4% believed that organs could be donated only during life and 56% believed that organ donation was possible only by a living person. 44% of the participants had a wrong belief that organs could be sold. Most of the participants who attended the survey had wrong information about brain death. 48% of the participants believed that brain death was coma, whereas 28% believed that brain death could be treated. Only 24% had the right information on brain death. About the questions on willingness to donate organs after death by pledging organs and signing donor cards, 32% of the participants said ‘Yes’, whereas 68% were not sure about it.

     

     

    The program was designed in such a way that the students could understand the procedure and the need for Organ Donation. This Awareness Program helped them to realize the importance of Organ Donation and 90% of the students who attended the session showed willingness to pledge their organs by signing up the Donor Cards. This showed that people around us are yet to realize and understand the need for Organ Donation and break the false notions attached with it. It is high time that everyone realized the value of each life around us. After all, Organ Donation is about gifting a new life to a person.
