

The National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) hosted the 12th Batch of the Transplant Coordinators Training Programme from January 27 to January 31, 2025, at the Safdarjung Hospital Campus, New Delhi. As part of the faculty, Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director of the MOHAN Foundation, NCR, was invited to address participants on key aspects of organ donation counselling.
Ms. Pallavi delivered an insightful session on “Grief Counselling and Making the Ask for Organ Donation,” to medical and nursing officers from various hospitals across India. Using a PowerPoint presentation, she covered essential topics, including:
• Breaking the news of death sensitively
• Understanding the stages of grief and supporting families through the process
• The importance of decoupling (separating the declaration of death from the organ donation discussion)
• Best practices for making the request for organ donation, emphasizing the why and how
Her session provided participants with practical tools and strategies to navigate challenging conversations with families while ensuring a compassionate approach to organ donation requests.
