“Meeting the Need” - CME for Doctors in SGRH

  • Taking forward the requirement of raising awareness on organ donation, a CME for doctors titled- “ Meeting the Need” was organized in SGRH on 24th January, 2013.

     

     The CME started with Ms. Pallavi talking about SGRH’s partnership with MOHAN Foundations and the work done so far, to take the deceased donation program forward. Dr. Saurabh Taneja, ICU intensivist touched upon identification of brain death patient and maintenance of a donor, the tests done to certify brain death. Dr. Sumit Ray, Head of the Intensive Care Unit spoke about social, cultural and technical issues in brain death certification. Dr. Harsh Jauhari, Head of Renal Transplant Surgery, Dr. Naimish Mehta Associate Director, Liver transplant surgery and Dr. Sujay Shad, Consultant, Cardiology spoke about the requirement vis-a-vis availability of organs namely kidney, liver and heart. Dr. Harsh Jauhari introduced the audience to the “Transplant of Human Organs Act, 1994” and its amendments.

     

    About 25 doctors were present. The CME followed by an interesting discussion on how varied religious beliefs prove as a hindrance in organ donation.
