Masterclass on ''Medico Legal Cases in Organ Donation'' a workshop for the employees of MOHAN Foundation and NATCO members

  • On January 6, 2024, MOHAN Foundation organised a masterclass on “Medico Legal Cases in Organ Donation," a workshop in collaboration with the Network and Alliance of Transplant Coordinators (NATCO), for its employees and NATCO members. The workshop was supported by the SBI Foundation.

     

    The objective of the masterclass was to provide attendees with knowledge regarding what constitutes a medicolegal case (MLC), why FIR and inquest are important, the role of forensics in brain death and organ donation, how donation takes place in such cases, and case experiences by senior transplant coordinators in coordinating MLC. Dr. Satish K. V., Professor and Head Department of Forensic Medicine SABVMCRI Bengaluru, and Dr. Yogendra Bansal, Professor and Head Department of Forensic Medicine PGIMER Chandigarh, were invited experts for the session. The transplant coordinators who shared their experiences were Ms. Sukhvinder Lal, Senior Officer, Organ Sharing and Transplant, Manipal Hospital; Dr. Parul Gupta, Transplant Coordinator, Department of Health Administration, PGIMER Chandigarh; Mr. Johnson A, Senior Manager, Transplant Services, Apollo Hospital; and Ms. Mayuri Barge, Manager, Multi Organ Transplant Programme, D.Y. Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Pune.

     

    Dr. Satish K. V. explained the following topics in detail:

    • Why FIR is needed in MLC

    • Why an inquiry is important

    • Role of forensic doctors in brain death organ donation

    • How organ donation takes place in such cases

     

    Senior transplant coordinators then shared their personal experiences in handling medical legal cases such as assault cases, suicide cases, and interstate organ donation cases and the problems they encountered.

     

    The participants posted the following queries, to name a few:

    • When is the investigation officer involved in the organ donation case?

    • Is there a time limit when an autopsy has to be done?

    • What is the legal meaning of manner of death and cause of death? Are they the same?

    • Death due to suicidal hanging, what is the process for organ donation?

    • Is consent obtained from a forensic expert before the retrieval of the organs?

     

    A total of 67 participants attended the session.
