MOHAN Foundation's Engagement at Genesis 2023, Madras Medical College

  • On September 15, 2023, the Institute of Neurosurgery at Madras Medical College conducted a CME program titled 'Neurosculpt' as part of the educational event 'Genesis 2023'. Around 100 medical students from various medical colleges in Tamil Nadu actively participated in the event. Mrs. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi from MOHAN Foundation, was invited as a faculty at the workshop.

    The workshop included a segment on ‘Brainstem Death’. Dr. Raghavendran, Professor of Neurosurgery, Madras Medical College, delivered a session on 'Identification and Certification of Brainstem Death.' His presentation encompassed a discussion on the concept and historical background of brainstem death, assessing cranial nerve reflexes, tests to confirm brainstem death, documentation procedures. A hands-on card-based activity was conducted to educate the process of organ donation and brain stem death, offering participants practical insights and understanding.

    Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi delivered a talk on ‘Breaking Bad News’. She stressed the importance of effective communication in breaking bad news to the patients’ families, particularly highlighting its significance for young doctors. She also discussed the challenges, barriers, strategies and real-life case studies. 

    Educational videos explaining the concept and confirmation of brainstem death were screened during the workshop, providing clarity to the participants.
