MOHAN Foundation invited to conduct an awareness session on Organ Donation for BSF jawans at CSWT Indore

  • On October 4, 2023, the MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation for the Border Security Force (BSF) jawans at the Central School of Weapon and Tactics (CSWT), Indore. Mr. Amit Trivedi, Event Specialist, Times of India, approached MOHAN Foundation’s Delhi Office to conduct the session. Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MF Delhi NCR, was the speaker for the session.

     

    This event was part of the Times Organ Donation Drive, a Times of India initiative to increase awareness of organ donation and urge Indians to join up as donors so that millions of people in need of a life-saving organ can find a second chance at survival. Since the campaign's inception in 2013, over 1.9 lakh people have registered to donate their organs, with the potential to save 1.3 million lives. The initiative is sponsored by Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH). MOHAN Foundation has been a knowledge partner of the effort since its inception. TOI and the KDAH recently organized an award ceremony on August 22, 2023, where contributors and honorees who have made significant contributions to fitness, outdoor recreation, and social impact were felicitated. Anupam Kher, the famous Bollywood actor, was the guest of honour.

     

    The program started off with the welcome speech of Mr. Tirtha Acharya, Commandant Officer CSWT, and the felicitation of Dr. Sunil Mehta, Vice President, KDAH, Dr. Ravi Nagar, Lead Consultant Urology and Kidney Transplant Surgery, KDAH and Dr. Vishal Goyal, Unit Head & Director, KDAH Indore.

     

    Ms. Simran began the session by explaining the current rate of organ donation and the gap between the demand and supply of organs. She then explained the basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation with the help of a PowerPoint presentation. The following topics were explained in detail:

     

    • Organ donation and its need in society

    • When and how does organ donation take place

    • Organs that can be donated during life and after death

    • Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994

    • Transplant waiting list in India

    • Brain death

    • Difference between coma and brain death

    • Eye donation

    • Role of MOHAN Foundation

    • Myths and facts about organ donation

     

    A short informative film on brain death was shown and the importance of family consent in the process of organ donation was also explained in detail. Participants also shared their views about the cause.

     

    Over all the session was very interactive where participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and asked many queries. To name a few:

     

    • How does a person get an organ while suffering from organ failure?

    • What are the ways to stop organ trafficking?

    • Process of pledging for organ donation?

     

    The session came to a close with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sunil Mehta, Vice President KDAH.

     

    Close to 200 soldiers participated in the session.
