MOHAN Foundation hosts an Advanced Transplant Coordinators’ Workshop

  • An Advanced Transplant Coordinators’ Workshop was held on 17th January 2014 in Chennai. Senior transplant coordinators and others from the field of organ donation attended the workshop. It was organized by MOHAN Foundation with the support of Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust. 

     

    The focus of the workshop was to address the needs and issues faced by the senior Transplant Coordinators and the MOHAN Foundation family of staff members.

     

    Two international faculty, Dr. Manjula Balasubramanian of Albert  Einstein Medical Centre, Philadelphia and Dr. Christopher Barry University of Rochester Medical Center, New York contributed to the deliberations.  Other seniors players who guided the discussions were Dr. J. Amalorpavanathan, Convenor, Cadaver Transplant Program, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Noble Gracious, Nodal Officer, Kerala Network for Organ Sharing and Dr. Sunil Shroff of MOHAN Foundation.

     

    There were interactive sessions on SWOT Analysis of Deceased Organ Donation, issues that affect the work, difficult cases,  job opportunities and burnouts in transplant coordination and importance of a clean database of transplant waitlist patients. Dr. Barry spoke of the role of social media in converting people to pledge their organs and his experience in New York. Dr. Shroff announced a collaboration with European Society of Organ Transplanantation in conducting an E - Learning Online certificate course on 'Multi-Organ Donor Procurement  Surgery'. 

     

    There were 40 participants  in the workshop. They came from Indore, Jaipur, Kerala, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Puducherry and Chennai. 

     

    Three internet based services were launched:

    1.   e module of Transplant Coordinator Training 
    2.   e donor card  for smart phones
    3.   Deceased Donor detail messaging service for smart phones

     

    The workshop ended with an evaluation by Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram. All present pledged to work in tandem with renewed passion  so that by the year 2020 India should have done 1200 deceased organ donation.
