  • On September 5, 2025, MOHAN Foundation, in collaboration with the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), organized an awareness session for nurses at the Ophthalmology Department as part of the National Eye Donation Fortnight, under the theme “Everyday Heroes.” The session was facilitated by Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Project Coordinator (Northeast) & Project Lead (Manipur), along with Mr. Bidyananda Laishram, Senior Program Executive, and Mrs. Thaudem Mayarani Devi, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation.

The program was coordinated by Dr. Y. Chingsuingamba Meitei, Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, with the support of Dr. Memota Laishram, Assistant Professor, and Ms. Chongtham Pritam, Medical Social Worker, RIMS.

Ms. Pritam opened the program with a welcome address and invited Dr. Meitei, who emphasized the importance of accurate knowledge on eye and organ donation. He spoke about the session’s theme “Everyday Heroes” and the urgent need to create greater awareness around this noble cause.

Following this, Ms. Monica delivered an interactive presentation introducing MOHAN Foundation and its initiatives to promote organ donation in Imphal. She shared global and national statistics, drew attention to India’s low donation rates, and explained the concept of organ donation, including its forms and the difference between brainstem death and coma. She highlighted the critical role of healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, in the donation process, addressed common myths, encouraged pledging and carrying donor cards, and shared inspiring stories of donors from across India and Manipur. She concluded by reminding participants that organ donation transcends religion, caste, and creed, leaving them with the thought-provoking question: “Are you ready?”

The session continued with Dr. Memota, who gave a detailed overview of the eye donation process. She guided participants—especially nursing staff—through each step of eye retrieval and emphasized its role in restoring sight. Drawing from her own experiences, she offered practical insights into the challenges nurses may face in real situations. Using a PowerPoint presentation and photographs from actual retrieval and donation activities, she provided participants with a deeper understanding of the procedure and its transformative impact.

Information pamphlets on organ donation were distributed during the program. Nearly 50 nurses from the Ophthalmology Department attended the session, many of whom expressed strong willingness to support and participate in future organ donation initiatives.
