Awareness session on Organ Donation was conducted for the staff of Bowring Hospital, Bengaluru

  • On 13th July 2022. MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness on Organ Donation at Bowring Hospital, Bengaluru. Mrs. Ranjini Shankar was the key resource

    Mrs. Ranjini Shankar MS, initiated the session by introducing MOHAN Foundation, its mission, vision and kept the audience engaged throughout the session. The following concepts were explained in detail

    • Concepts of organ and tissue donation,
    • The types of death i.e., cardiac death and brain death
    •  Brain Death and the procedure to declare Brain Death through Apnoea test
    •  Procedure of deceased organ donation and live organ donation.
    • Procedure of skin and bone donation.
    • Barriers in the process of organ donation
    • Myths and facts related to organ donation and its impact on the society
    • Importance of Donor card

    Mr. Marulappa LN continued the session by explaining in brief about the eye donation and the complete process of transplantation of corneas. Mrs. Ranjini Shankar MS spoke thereafter, inviting the participants to join MOHAN Foundation’s internship and volunteering program.

    The audience were interactive throughout the session and the following points were discussed in detail:

    • Does my age/fitness level disqualify me from being a donor?
    • Any provisional benefits from government for being a conditional donor?
    • Can Covid recovered cases be considered for organ donation
    • Organ allocation by Jeevasarthakathe
    • Tissue banking procedure
    • Time duration for allocating the organs
    • Can priority be given to the recipient suffering from end stage of organ failure?
    • Any financial support for the donor family
    • How is the consent taken from the family if the children are too small?
    • Declaration of Brain Death by panel members
    • Brain stem death certification process.

    Close to 29 students attended the session.

    Brochures and donor cards were distributed at the end of the session
