Awareness on pediatric kidney diseases

  • On June 29, 2022, the MOHAN Foundation organised an education seminar on Organ Donation and Pediatric Kidney Diseases for staff of  NGO - Golden Butterflies, Children Palliative Care Foundation, Chennai.

     

    Around 25 staff, volunteers and trustees of the NGO attended the session. The experts were Dr. Rajeevalochana Parthasarathy, Consultant Nephrologist, Madras Medical Mission and Dr Sukanya Govind, Pediatric Nephrologist, Mehta Hospital.

     

    Dr Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer of MOHAN Foundation welcomed the audience and the speakers. She introduced the work of MOHAN Foundation and conducted a fun quiz to get the audience into the subject.

     

    Dr Rajeeva then introduced the subject of kidney health, diseases in adults and gave a case study of palliative care in a CKD patient. Dr Sukanya gave an overview of the kidney diseases in children and treatment options. She spoke of the effect of the illness on the parents and grandparents. She introduced  the subject of palliative care for such children and the age based perception on death by the children. Using examples she explained the need for a grief counsellor in pediatric settings.

     

    Post the talks there was a discussion on what manner of play and craft therapy is possible with children with fistula. How to counsel couples who have split because of the sick child. How to deal with the guilt of the mother for not agreeing to donate a kidney.

     

    At the end, Ms Ramalakshmi, Project Manager, Golden Butterflies, thanked the speakers and MOHAN Foundation for the efforts in organising the seminar.
