Awareness Session on Organ Donation for Nursing Staff, MAX Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun

  • On June 30, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, Uttarakhand, conducted an organ donation awareness session for the nursing staff at MAX Super Specialty Hospital, Dehradun. The session was facilitated by Mr. Arun Sharma, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Uttarakhand, and was attended by nursing officers from the Department of Critical Care.

     

    Mr. Arun commenced the session by introducing MOHAN Foundation and highlighting its mission, objectives, and ongoing initiatives in the field of organ donation and transplantation. He then delivered an interactive talk covering the importance of organ donation, eligibility criteria for donors, living and deceased donation, organ donation during life and after death, brain death and its distinction from coma, eye and skin donation, corneal preservation after death, provisions under the Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, living kidney transplantation facilities at AIIMS Rishikesh, common myths and facts related to organ donation, and the various ways individuals can contribute to this life-saving cause.

     

    During the session, Mr. Arun emphasized the crucial role of nursing officers in identifying potential organ donors, supporting the organ donation process, and providing compassionate care to donor families. He encouraged participants to initiate conversations on organ donation with their families and communities and to serve as ambassadors for the cause within their professional and personal circles.

     

    The session concluded with an interactive discussion during which participants raised several pertinent questions, including how much time families are given to make a decision after brain stem death is declared, the steps involved in the organ retrieval process, the legal requirements and documentation needed for organ donation, criteria for donor eligibility, the specific roles and responsibilities of nursing professionals in deceased donation cases, and the appropriate procedure for counselling families and referring potential donors. The discussion reflected the participants' keen interest in strengthening their knowledge and role in organ donation.

     

    The participants appreciated the initiative undertaken by MOHAN Foundation and acknowledged the importance of regular capacity-building sessions for healthcare professionals. 

     

    Approximately 30 nursing officers attended the programme.
