On June 25, 2025, MOHAN Foundation, in collaboration with Lions Club Rishikesh Devbhoomi, conducted an awareness session on organ donation at the Goods & Services Tax (GST) Office, Rishikesh. The session was organized following an invitation from Mr. Rajnikant Sahi, Assistant Commissioner, GST, Rishikesh, Uttarakhand.
The session was facilitated by Mr. Sanchit Arora, Project Leader at MOHAN Foundation, currently stationed at AIIMS Rishikesh. It was attended by staff members of the GST Office, who participated with enthusiasm and curiosity.
The session began with Mr. Arora encouraging the attendees to share their existing understanding of organ donation, which helped create an open and engaging atmosphere. He then delivered a comprehensive presentation covering key aspects of organ donation, including:
• What is organ donation and why it is important
• Who is eligible to become an organ donor
• Differences between living and deceased donation
• Organ donation during life and after death
• Understanding brain death
• The distinction between brain death and coma
• Eye donation and guidelines for preserving corneas after death
• Key provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994
• The role of MOHAN Foundation in promoting organ donation
• Myths versus facts about organ donation
• How individuals can contribute to this noble cause
During the session, one participant shared that his family had donated his mother-in-law’s corneas after her demise. Another participant mentioned that he had already registered for corneal donation, underscoring the growing awareness and acceptance of the cause.
The session was highly interactive, with participants raising thoughtful questions such as:
• What is the timeframe for retrieving organs and tissues after death?
• How are organs allocated between government and private hospitals?
• How can one pledge to donate their organs?
In conclusion, Mr. Arora encouraged all participants to have open conversations with their families, friends, and colleagues about organ donation. He also recommended watching the film Aye Zindagi on Zee5 or YouTube to gain further insights into the emotional and transformative impact of organ donation.
Approximately 23 staff members attended the session. Many expressed their willingness to pledge for organ donation after reflecting on the discussion with their families. The session proved to be a meaningful opportunity to raise awareness and inspire action towards saving lives through organ donation.
