A national sensitization campaign conducted on Organ Donation for employees of State Bank of India of Bangalore circle

  • On January 12th, 2022, SBI Foundation, the CSR arm of State Bank of India organized a webinar ‘FROM DUST TO LIFE’ – an awareness workshop on Organ Donation, for the staff members of the SBI’s Bangalore Circle. This webinar is part of Project Gift Hope, Gift Life that aims at enhancing organ donation in India, initiated by MOHAN Foundation and supported by SBI Foundation.

    Ms. Jaya Jairam from MOHAN Foundation was the speaker of this session. Ms. Juhi Ranjan of SBI Foundation moderated the webinar and welcomed the speaker and audience.

    Ms. Manjula Kalyanasundaram, CEO and Managing Director of SBI Foundation began the session by welcoming the dignitaries and employees of SBI Bangalore circle and MOHAN Foundation team.

    Ms. Jaya Jairam introduced herself and MOHAN Foundation. She began her presentation by asking the participants about their personal thoughts and feeling about organ donation.

    She then touched upon the following topics about organ donation and its importance in India.

    1. Why donate organs? - huge gap between the need and availability of organs.
    2. Power of organ donation - a touching video of a testimonial by a heart recipient who expressed gratitude to the donor family was played
    3. Who can donate? - Law and types of donors: living and deceased
    4. How THOA has classified related and unrelated donors
    5. When it comes to illegal activities in organ donation, how stringent the law is?
    6. Concept of brain death and circulatory death was introduced
    7. What can be donated after brain death and circulatory death?
    8. Eye and Skin donation and its procedures were explained in a simple way
    9. Scenario of organ donation in India Vis-à-vis rest of the world
    10. Some of the myths and facts were discussed in detail

     

    Lastly, a video clipping of Chairman of SBI – Mr. Dinesh Khara speaking about the importance of improving awareness amongst public, during the launch of Project Gift Hope, Gift Life was played. The video also demonstrated as to how SBI’s employees could pledge their organs through SBI’s own HRMS portal. Details of how their families and friends could take the pledge using SBI Foundation’s microsite www.sbif.organdonor.in was shared.

     

    114 participants participated in the session. Ms. Jaya Jairam briefly shared her own life experience of being how the act of kidney donation saved her own life.

    1. In circulatory death why only tissues are donated?
    2. Can a drunkard donate?
    3. Age limit to donate organs?
    4. If a person dies in a remote place where there is no proper infrastructure and awareness, how to carry on the process of organ donation?
