National Service Scheme includes organ donation in its orientation program

  • Dr. Ravi Wankhede Director of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur center was invited to deliver a talk on Deceased Organ Donation at Ambedkar Social Work College on 22th October 2016. This was for the National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers and Project officer & Non NSS Students of the college.

     Ms. Mangala Astankar, student of the college took the initiative to organize the talk.

    In the beginning Dr. Ravi Wankhede informed about the MOHAN Foundation and its activities. By using a PPP he highlighted the historical, social, religious, legal aspects and the importance of organ donation. He emphasized on the need to understand the concept of Brain death, which should be accepted as a permanent and irreversible condition. When the family of the deceased consent to donate the organs and tissues, it can save the at least 8 organ failure patients.  

     

    He said such organ donation is common in the developed countries. In our country the number is pathetic due to ignorance and religious misconceptions. He gave example of Tamil Nadu which has made tremendous progress in the topic and has set an example for other States to emulate.

    2) How many people signed consent form for Organ Donation?

    3) Who is the right person for donate organ when patient is Brain death?

    4) What is the time duration for kidney donation?

    After discussion Dr. Vinod Gajghate Principal of Ambedkar Social Work College gave  a  vote of thanks to Dr. Ravi Wankhede.  80 Students and staff was present and 8 signed the consent form and picked a donor card.
