Awareness session on organ donation at K & S Partners, Gurugram

  • On March 22, 2017, MOHAN Foundation was invited by K&S Partners to conduct an awareness session on organ donation at their office in Sector 44, Gurugram. Ms. Sarbari Ghosh Head HR took the initiative to organize the talk and she was also instrumental in organizing the first session in the said premises in August 2015. Dr Muneet Kaur Sahi Programme Manager, Delhi-NCR was the resource person for the session. Ms. Jyoti Sharma, Transplant Coordinator, accompanied her.

     

    K&S Partners (K&S) is an Intellectual Property boutique founded in 1994 under its erstwhile name 'Kumaran & Sagar' as a three-member team; today the firm has over 110 professionals and is amongst the top five IP firms in India. It has offices in Gurgaon, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad and is recognized for its outreach in areas of policymaking and active participation in and contribution to drafting of legislation in various areas of Intellectual Property Rights.

     

    Dr Muneet began the session by introducing MOHAN Foundation and its activities. Then a short film on brain stem death was shown to the group to get their inputs on the film and whether anyone knew that organ donation is only considered in such a condition. Few who had attended the first session in August 2015 raised their hands in acknowledgement.

     

    The difference between coma and brain death, cardiac death, eye donation, solid organs & tissue donation, myths versus reality check around organ donation and THO Act was explained in detail to the participants. The process of pledging one's organs by filling up the donor card and sharing one's wish to donate organs upon death with the family members was also stressed upon.

     

    At the end of the session, queries of the participants were taken up:

    • How long the heart would continue to beat once brain death has been established and the deceased is kept on the ventilator?
    • Which tissues can be donated after cardiac death?
    • Importance of a donor card and online registration in organ donation

     

    Around 22 people attended the session and 20 donor cards were picked up.
