A toddler is in a critical condition in England after Iceland's volcanic ash and the disruption of flights delayed a scheduled bone marrow transplant.

The girl is one of the 16 patients who are now in "critical red" condition following a delay in transplants. A spokesman for the Anthony Nolan Trust, which organized the marrow transplant said that it was a life and death situation for the girl and added that her family was going through a nerve-wracking time.

The girl was due to receive a marrow from Canada, but flight restrictions mean that the marrow has not arrived. The spokesman for the Anthony Nolan Trust also added that it was her last chance for survival.

Bone marrow transplants are usually recommended for patients with leukemia.
