In a deeply moving act of compassion, a
10-month-old baby from Kerala has become the
state�s youngest organ donor, giving new life to multiple patients after being
declared brain-dead following a road accident.
The infant, Alin Sherin Abraham from Mallappally in Pathanamthitta district, suffered critical injuries when the car she was travelling in with her mother and grandparents met with an accident earlier this month.
She was initially rushed to nearby hospitals before being shifted to a specialized facility in Kochi for advanced treatment. Despite intensive medical care, doctors confirmed brain death � a legal and medical determination of death based on the irreversible loss of all brain function � after which her parents made the extraordinary decision to donate her organs.
Organs Give New Life to Five Patients
Following consent from her parents,
doctors retrieved her liver, two kidneys, heart valve and corneas. These organs are expected to benefit five recipients, including young children awaiting transplants in Kerala�s government and private hospitals.
One of her kidneys has been allocated to a child undergoing treatment at the S.A.T. Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, while the liver is set to save an infant in urgent need of a transplant. The organs were transported swiftly through a coordinated �green corridor� to ensure timely transplantation.
Parents� Decision Draws Statewide Tributes
The baby�s parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, were widely praised for their courage and selflessness in choosing organ donation amid personal tragedy. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar expressed condolences and commended the family�s decision, calling it an act that would inspire society.
