The King Edward Memorial(KEM) Hospital in Parel will be offering liver transplants at cheaper rates in the City. The hospital is also one of the first to offer both cadaveric and live liver transplants.

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray inaugurated the new facility on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, he said, “Everybody has dreams, but very few work towards making them come true. The department of Gastroenterology is only seven years old. It has to be credited for realising this dream.”

A liver transplant at private hospitals costs Rs 25-30 lakh, but at KEM it costs only Rs 5 lakh. KEM Hospital dean Dr. Sanjay Oak said that patients would be getting the best care, "The first 100 surgeries will be even cheaper, as the Narotam Sekhsaria Trust has promised us to fund most of the Rs 5-lakh fee," he added.

The hospital has been renovated extensively in order to offer this new facility as two state-of-the-art operation theatres (OT) have been built.
