A groundbreaking 15-hour procedure by a team of 30 Scottish medicos crowned Jennifer with the title of ‘bravest lady’ in Scotland. The procedure took place in order to carry out the first live liver transplant to save Jennifer’s husband’s life.

Daniel Foster had only less than a year with him to find a liver donor to save his life. When nothing turned up, his wife came forward and rescued him by donating more than half of her healthy liver.

This maiden attempt was backed up a surgical team, which was led by Consultant surgeons Murat Akyol and Ernest Hidalgo

The operations on Daniel and Jennifer were conducted at the same time.

Mr Akyol, who was in charge of the second part of the operation, said: "With Jennifer the operation was extremely critical.”

"It makes us much more nervous when the person is fit and healthy and putting them in danger is unjustifiable.

"Daniel's operation carried far more risk for very obvious reasons. However, on this occasion we never encountered any surprises."

He added: "After four and a half hours the graft was ready to be implemented, it was very difficult to time this perfectly.

"Once the liver had been removed it needed 45 minutes to extend some blood vessels."

Mr Hidalgo said: "I must pay tribute to Jennifer she has been brilliant throughout all of this and without her it could not have happened."

Jennifer had to undergo a lot of psychological tests before actually she was claimed fit to be a donor.

The brighter side of the story is that the whole of her efforts brought fruitful results.  Jennifer showed a speedy recovery and is discharged from the hospital.
