Donor Memorial

  • Saraswati

On December 11, 2024, at 5:30 AM, Dr. Rajender Saini, the family doctor of the bereaved family, received a call from Mr. Ram Meher, the father of the deceased, informing him about the demise of his two-day-old daughter at Doon Hospital, Dehradun. Dr. Rajender promptly shared this information with Mr. Gopal Narang, Charter President of Lions Club Rishikesh Devbhoomi, and Mr. Sanchit Arora, Project Leader at MOHAN Foundation, stationed at AIIMS Rishikesh.

The deceased neonate, a baby girl, was born to Ms. Nancy Devi at approximately 3:30 PM on December 8, 2024, at Doon Hospital, Dehradun. According to Dr. Ashok Kumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Paediatrics, Doon Hospital, the baby suffered from birth asphyxia and was placed on ventilator support immediately after birth. Despite intensive medical efforts, including CPR, the baby's condition worsened, and she succumbed on December 11, 2024, at 2:30 AM. This information was conveyed by Mr. Ram Meher during counselling.

Upon learning about the case, Mr. Arora counselled the family, explaining that in such cases involving neonates, whole-body donation was the only viable option as the corneas had not developed properly. After providing detailed information, the family was convinced to donate the neonate's whole body for medical research and education.

Mr. Arora subsequently contacted Dr. Rajesh Maurya, Professor in the Department of Anatomy at Doon Medical College, to discuss the possibility of donation. Dr. Maurya agreed to proceed with the donation and personally spoke to the family to confirm their consent and address their concerns. He also involved Dr. Mukesh Goyal, President of the Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, to honour the family and emphasize the importance of whole-body donation.

To ensure the smooth completion of the process, Mr. Arora travelled to Doon Medical College, Dehradun, to assist the family with the documentation and other formalities.

Despite their heartbreaking loss and immense grief, Ms. Nancy and Mr. Ram Meher displayed remarkable courage and selflessness by agreeing to donate their daughter's body, thereby contributing positively to society.

The deceased neonate was named Saraswatiť by Dr. Goyal to honour her memory. He assured the grieving parents that her body would be preserved in the college's anatomy department to aid in the medical education of future doctors. In a heartfelt gesture, the team from Doon Medical College, MOHAN Foundation, and Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti expressed their gratitude to the family by presenting them with a certificate acknowledging their selfless and noble decision.

This act of generosity amidst immense grief exemplified the family's commitment to humanity and the advancement of medical education.
