An informative and inspiring talk on organ donation was held at the Saligao Institute in Bardez, Goa, on March 1, 2026, by Mr Gabriel Pereira, an Organ Donation Ambassador for the MOHAN Foundation. The session aimed to create awareness about the importance of organ donation and to encourage participants to pledge their organs.
The talk was organised for Lions Club members from various areas during the District Governor’s 3rd Zone Advisory Meet, hosted by the Lions Club of Mapusa Suburban. MJF Lion Richard Pinto presided over the meeting. Following the agenda, Mr Gabriel was invited to speak on the topic "Donate Organs, Save Lives." He began by asking the members if a person who passes away at home can they be an organ donor? Some responded affirmatively, prompting him to explain that in such cases, only tissues like corneas and skin can be donated. Body donation is also possible, but a person declared brain dead due to a road traffic accident or a brain haemorrhage can become a potential organ donor.
Mr Pereira highlighted the urgent need for understanding the concepts of organ donation in Goa and explained how one donor can save multiple lives through the donation of vital organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and pancreas. He clearly outlined the process of organ donation, including brain death certification and legal procedures, to dispel common myths and misconceptions. He mentioned that currently, in Goa, only kidneys and corneas are being transplanted, informing attendees about the number of people on the waiting list registered with SOTTO-Goa, the State Organ Tissue Transplant Organisation.
About 20 members attended the session, and Gabriel provided FAQs (Frequently Asked Question) pamphlets containing a QR code for pledging their organs. At the end of the session, many club members expressed their appreciation for the information they received on the topic of organ donation.
Gabriel Pereira thanked all the club members for inviting the MOHAN Foundation to address them on this vital subject.
