Organ Donation Awareness for Odiya Samaj Members in Nagpur

  • Mr. Prashant Mishra, the Secretary of Odiya Samaj invited Mr. Bulu Behera of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur to deliver a talk on organ donation and transplantation on 10th January 2021. The audience were the members of the Odiya Samaj.

    Mr. Behera explained the process of organ and tissue donation while living and after death and also gave brief history of organ donation. He explained cardiac death and brain death, listed the causes of brain death; and how a brain dead person can save the lives of about 8 people and enhance the lives of 100 by donating his organs and tissues like eye, skin, bone etc. He explained the roles of NOTTO, ROTTO, SOTTO and ZTCC, the various governing bodies in the country.

    He also spoke about the lack of awareness around organ donation in India and how the situation is much better in many developed countries. MOHAN Foundation has been actively spreading awareness through its various centers across the country.

    Around 60 people were present; 15 of them signed consent forms for organ donation and 20 of them took pledge forms to discuss with their families. Pamphlets were distributed to everyone present.

    Questions asked by participants:   

    1)      Is it possible to undergo a bone marrow transplant in Nagpur?

    2)      What would be the cost of a kidney transplant in Nagpur?

    3)      Who is head of the MOHAN Foundation?
