Organ Donation Awareness at Sai Taj Polytechnic College, Nagpur

  • On 21st January 2020, MOHAN Foundation was invited by Mr. Pankaj D Mandape, NSS in- charge of M J College Bhagini Mandal in Nagpur to talk about organ donation. Mr. Bulu Behera, Transplant Coordinator, Nagpur, was invited as a speaker for Organ Donation and Transplantation. The programme was held at Sai Taj Polytechnic College in Drugdhamna, Nagpur. Participants were the NSS Students of M.J College and Sai Taj Polytechnic College.

    Mr. Mandape, an Associate Professor at M.J College delivered the welcome address. The programme began at 11 am and around 40 students were present. Mr. Bulu Behera in his talk introduced MOHAN Foundation, the work it does and explained about organ and tissue donation.

    Mr. Behera presented in detail, a wide range of topics, including the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, listing the offences and penalties related to malpractices in organ donation.

    The following topics were discussed in detail:

    • What is organ failure and its causes?
    • Who can donate organs?
    • When can organs be donated?
    • What is living donation?
    • Natural death and brain death
    • Brain death and coma
    • Age criteria to donate organ
    • What is the time period to donate organ?
    • Myths and misconceptions around organ donation
    • How to register as an organ donor?
    • What is the role of hospitals in organ donation?

    Mr. Bulu Behera clarified the doubts participants had. Eight participants registered as organ donors and received their donor cards, while a few others chose to register online. MOHAN Foundation is thankful for the opportunity.
