Organ Donation Awareness at Atthi College of Nursing, Gudiyattam

  • An awareness programme on ‘Organ Donation and Transplantation’ was organised for the students at the Atthi Nursing College, near Gudiyattam on July 19, 2022. This programme was part of the continuing nursing  education (CNE) series conducted by the college to give more learning opportunities for its students and faculty. 113 nursing students and faculty participated in the event. The programme started with a welcome address by Mrs. G Revathy, Principal, Atthi Nursing College.

    Ms Sujatha Suriyamoorthi, Associate Director, MOHAN Foundation addressed the students on the ‘Concepts of organ donation and transplantation’. Her talk included basic concepts such as living donation and deceased donation, brain stem death and circulatory death, organs and tissues that can be donated, types of transplants and consent system followed in the world. She also emphasized the importance of donor pledge and discussing the wish with the family members. 

    Followed her was Dr Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer, MOHAN Foundation who conducted an activity-based session on ‘Protocols followed in a hospital for deceased organ donation’. The steps involved in facilitating deceased donation and the students were explained to the participants.

    As part of the programme, educative videos on organ donation, brain stem death and certification were shown to the participants.

    The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Professor Ms. Rajalakshmi, Atthi Nursing College. 18 students took the pledge for organ donation and received their donor cards.
