  • On June 20, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, Nagaland conducted an organ donation awareness session at Charity Higher Secondary School, Kohima, as part of its ongoing efforts to educate and inspire young minds about the life-saving impact of organ donation. The session was facilitated by Mr. Lirenthung N. Kithan, Project Lead, MOHAN Foundation, while the awareness message was delivered by Ms. Sedekieno Rino, Programme Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Nagaland.

The program commenced with a warm welcome address by Mr. Diethozo Pfuse, Assistant Headmaster, who expressed his appreciation to the MOHAN Foundation team for taking the initiative to educate students on the importance of organ donation and for creating awareness among the younger generation.

Mr. Lirenthung introduced the students and teachers to the vision and mission of MOHAN Foundation and highlighted the various awareness and advocacy activities being carried out across Nagaland. Engaging the audience with an interactive question, he asked whether anyone possessed a “superpower” to save lives, emphasizing that a single organ donor can save up to eight lives. He also shared updates on the ongoing efforts to establish the Human Organ Retrieval and Transplantation Program at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK), which is expected to significantly benefit patients in need of organ transplantation within the state.

The awareness session was further led by Ms. Sedekieno, who engaged participants in an informative and interactive discussion on organ donation. She explained the importance of organ donation, the organs and tissues that can be donated, donor eligibility criteria, living and deceased donation, and key provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994. Participants were also informed about the various stages at which organ and tissue donation can take place.

A key highlight of the session was the discussion on brain death, where Ms. Sedekieno clearly explained the distinction between brain death and coma. A short educational video was screened to help participants better understand its significance in organ donation and transplantation.

The session also covered eye and skin donation, while addressing common myths and misconceptions surrounding organ donation. Participants were encouraged to view organ donation as an act of compassion and generosity that can offer a second chance at life to those suffering from end-stage organ failure. The importance of donor cards and the process of voluntarily pledging as an organ donor were also explained.

The program witnessed enthusiastic participation from 118 students and 15 teachers.

The session concluded on a positive note, leaving participants better informed and motivated to become advocates for organ donation within their families and communities.
