Observation visit by Social Work students of S.D.N.B Vaishnav College, Chennai

  • The first year MSW (Masters’ degree in Social Work) students of S.D.N.B Vaishnav College, Chennai, visited MOHAN Foundation on 19th July 2012. This orientation programme on organ donation was a part of their field work curriculum. Ms.Sindhuja spoke about MOHAN Foundation and the work that the Foundation has been doing through the years. An Organ Donation film was screened for the students to apprise them of the concept of brain death and organ donation.

     

    Ms.Jessi shared a few donor stories and explained the concept of brain death, organ donation, myths, religious beliefs on organ donation and the importance of carrying a Donor Card. She also shared some case studies from her experiences in the Government General Hospital, Chennai. After the talk the participants asked questions related to the total time taken to complete the process of organ donation and retrieval. The students were also interested in learning about the counseling process and how transplant coordinators dealt with their emotions during counseling. The session was very interactive as the students asked many questions like


    1. What is the different between brain death and coma?

    2. What is apnoea test?

    3. How is organ allocation done?

     

    At the end of the session all the students pledged for “Donor Card” and extended their support for the cause of Organ Donation. Mrs.Mullai, on behalf of the team, lauded MOHAN Foundation for the remarkable work that it was rendering to society.
