On August 3, 2025, MOHAN Foundation, in collaboration with the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, organised an awareness event, “Walkathon for Life 2.0,” to mark the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day. The walkathon began at the City Convention Centre, Konung Mamang, and concluded at the JNIMS A-Block campus.
The event was flagged off by Dr. Chambo Gonmei, Director of Health Services, Manipur, and Dr. Longjam Usharani Devi, Director, JNIMS. Leading the walk was Dr. Kh. Lokeshwar Singh, Medical Superintendent, JNIMS, accompanied by faculty heads of Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Anatomy, along with staff, students, and members of the local community. Representing MOHAN Foundation were Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Project Coordinator – Northeast & Project Lead – Manipur; Mr. Bidyananda Laishram, Senior Program Executive; and Ms. Thaudem Mayarani Devi, Program Executive. Mr. Gailian Kamei, Transplant Coordinator at JNIMS, also participated as the event organiser.
Following the walk, a felicitation ceremony was held at JNIMS to honour families of deceased organ donors. Dr. Chambo Gonmei described organ donation as “the ultimate humanitarian act,” a gift that transcends life itself. Dr. Usharani highlighted that the main objective of observing National Organ Donation Day is to create awareness about donating vital organs after death so that the lives of patients in need of transplantation can be saved and given a new lease of life. Dr. Lokeshwar Singh reflected on the state’s achievements, citing successful transplant cases as a testament to the commitment of the medical fraternity in Manipur. Prof. Kangjam Sholay, Urologist and Transplant Surgeon at JNIMS, emphasised engaging the younger generation, noting that their active participation is crucial to sustaining organ donation efforts. Prof. Thoibahenba Sukham, Anaesthesiologist, JNIMS, echoed this by stressing the importance of teamwork among medical professionals, government bodies, and civil society in ensuring the continuity of this life-saving programme.
In her keynote address, Ms. Monica inspired the audience with a heartfelt message: if society stands together for this noble cause, many more lives can be saved. She reminded everyone that a single deceased donor has the potential to save up to nine lives and urged individuals and organisations to actively support organ donation through initiatives, campaigns, and public advocacy.
Approximately 150 participants joined the walkathon, which concluded with a pledge-taking ceremony. The strong turnout reflected growing public support for organ donation in the state. The campaign also received enthusiastic backing from the youth, many of whom signed a signature board to mark their support for the cause.
