MOHAN Foundation conducts State Level Continuing Medical Education on Organ Donation

  • MOHAN Foundation (MF) conducted a CME at Vijaya Educational Academy on 12th March 2016.  The theme was Organ Donation. Mrs. Vimala Principal Vijaya Educational Academy organised the CME for paramedical students from various colleges.

    The programme started with the welcome address given by Ms. Deepika faculty, Vijaya Educational Academy during the talk she welcomed all the representatives from MOHAN Foundation and all the students from various colleges.

     

    Current concept of Brain Death and Organ Donation 

    Dr.Sumana Navin started the session with the concept of organ donation and highlighted the fact on the kidney disease. She also give an overview on transplantation and THO Act during her talk she covered the following topics.

    • Type of donation
    • What are the tissues and organ can be donated
    • What are the organs can be donated after Cardiac Death 
    • Organs can be donated after Brain death
    • Common causes for Brain Death
    • Difference between Coma and Brain Death
    • Difference between the comities and persistent  vegetative state
    • Brain Stem Death Certification
    • Time factor for organ transplantation
    • Who can donate – mentioned about the age factor –age is a expandable
    • Myths 

    During her talk she asked the students that how many students have donated their blood few students from the group have shared their experience after donating the blood.

     

    Public awareness in organ donation

    Dr. Hemal Kanvinde explained how to do public awareness to promote organ donation among different groups. She also mentioned how to address the gathering and to seek their attention. The following categories she covered,

    Indian scenario on Organ Donation and the future 

    Dr. Sunil Shroff explained about the current scenario and future on Organ Donation from an Indian perspective. He also covered the Iranian Model of paid donation and Chinese model to overcome the organ shortage. In his talk he highlighted the importance of Organ Donation with this quotes “One to care and other to spare” at the end of the session he mention the MOHAN Foundation Contribution to the national programme.

    The inauguration started with lighting the lamp and all the dignitaries addressed the students.  Welcome address was given by Mrs. A. Vimala,  Principal, Vijaya Educational Academ. She appreciated MOHAN Foundation for their work and the support for the CME and welcomed the dignitariesy present and the students.

    A one minute prayer was offered in memory of Professor (late) Mr. S. Sukumaran. His family donated his whole body for the research purpose to continue his passion in educating the students.

     

    Safety measures in Deceased Donation

    Dr. V.Poorna Chandran, ICU In-charge Vijay Health Centre explained the importance of early identification, screening of brain dead donor and donor maintenance.  

     

    Role of Grief Counsellor/ Transplant Coordinator in Organ and Tissue Donation

    Ms. Sujatha Niranjan MIS Manager, MF started her session with a case study presentation to make the students to understand the concept in the better way. She also explained the stages of grief and highlighted the keys points that should be remembered in the process of counselling;

    Safety measures in Living donation

    Dr.Radha Venkatramana she explained the Ethical and Psychological criteria in live donation she also gave an overview on the transplant scenario in India.

     

    Role of State TRANSTAN in organ donation

    Ms. Anjana Bindlish Chief Programme Manager shared her personal experience on live transplant her elder sister donated her kidney to her father and both lead a healthy and happy life with that note she briefed the role of TRANSTAN in the deceased organ donation programme.

     

    Career in transplantation

    Dr. Sumana Navin Course Director MOHAN Foundation highlighted the career development in the field for Transplantation for the paramedical students

    • Poster
    • Quiz

    Staff of the Vijaya Health Academy  and MOHAN Foundation Team  coordinated  the competitions. 

    During the Validictory Mrs. Bharathi Reddy thanked MOHAN Foundation for all their support provided throughout the event she also expressed her wish to organise a programme in the future. Prizes were disturbed to the winners in all the competitions.   

    Around 250 students participated in the programme. MOHAN Foundation also put up an awareness  and registration stall to give information to the students to pledge donor card.139 students pledged and took a donor card.
