MOHAN Foundation Delhi NCR office conducted an awareness session on Organ Donation at ICICI Academy for Skills, Karol Bagh.

  • On October 26, 2023, MOHAN Foundation Delhi NCR office conducted an organ donation awareness session at ICICI Academy for Skills. Karol Bagh. Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MF Delhi NCR, and Ms. Sanya Santosh, Programme Officer, MF Delhi NCR were the speakers for the session.

     

    ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth (ICICI Foundation) was founded by the ICICI Group in early 2008 to continue building upon the ICICI Group’s legacy of promoting inclusive growth. In 2013, ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth launched a national-level initiative, ICICI Academy for Skills (ISA) to meet the demand for skilled labour and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for the less privileged youth. The Academy offers industry-relevant and job-oriented vocational training in 13 technical and 4 office skill courses. 26, Academies spread across 20 States/Union Territories provide free of cost training that empowers the youth to build a better future for the nation and themselves.

     

    There were 2 sessions: the first session for the morning batch, where 50 participants attended, was conducted by Ms. Simran; thereafter, the second session for the afternoon batch, where 45 participants attended, was conducted by Ms. Sanya Santosh. The session began by asking participants what they knew about organ donation, and one participant shared her personal experience with having her grandfather’s corneas donated. The MF team then explained the current status of organ donation in India. They also explained the basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation with the help of a PowerPoint presentation. One of the faculty members of the academy also shared her personal experience where her father-in-law was suffering from cancer, and they reached a situation where they were forced to buy blood because she and her husband had medical conditions due to which they were not allowed to donate blood. Later, her father-in-law passed away due to illness. Because of her personal experience, she understood the importance of donation, and since a few months ago, she started donating her blood. The following topics were explained in detail:

     

    • What is organ donation and it’s need in the society.

    • Who can be an organ donor?

    • Explanation about live and deceased donor

    • Organs that can be donated during life and after death

    • Brain death

    • Eye donation and steps required to preserve cornea after death.

    • Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994

    • Role of MOHAN Foundation

    • What an individual can do to contribute for this noble cause

    • Myths and facts about organ donation

    • Difference between coma and brain death

     

    A short informative film on brain death was shown and the importance of family consent in the process of organ donation was also explained in detail.

     

    Over all the session was very interactive where participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion.

    After the session, the faculty of the academy also asked participants a few questions, including:

    • If an individual dies at home in the morning and family gets to know by evening, will the organs and tissues of the deceased person be donated?

    • If a person dies of a heart attack, will the deceased person’s family be able to donate his or her organs?

    • What is your understanding of human organ trafficking?

     

    Close to 95 participants attended the session.
