MOHAN Foundation Conducts First Organ Recovery Lab in Rajasthan

Updated on Thursday, November 13, 2014
  • Dr. Barry, of MOHAN Foundation Jaipur Citizen’s Forum (MFJCF) and recently appointed Transplant Consultant to the State of Rajasthan, conducted Northern India’s first abdominal recovery cadaver lab at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Government Hospital in Jaipur on 11th November 2014. Present were the entire SMS Liver Transplant Team, 20 members in total so far, including Drs. Ajay Sharma, Rajindher Rao, and Man Prakash. Dr. Barry first delivered a detailed lecture on every step necessary to perform an abdominal organ (liver and kidney) recovery surgery. Then he demonstrated the entire procedure on a cadaver graciously provided by the Department of Anatomy at SMS Hospital Medical School. Drs. Sharma, Rao, and Man Prakash provided expert surgical assistance as they learned the procedure.

This is the first time that such a demonstration was performed in Northern India and plans are in place to continue such training so that SMS Liver Transplant will soon be able to perform abdominal organ recoveries on brain dead certified and family consented organ donors in Rajasthan. Also, the SMS Liver Transplant Team plans to offer a formal course in organ recovery to all interested surgeons and related transplant personnel throughout the State (and perhaps throughout India).

Rajasthan’s Health Minister, Shree Rajindra Rathore, has been apprised of this accomplishment and he continues to be extremely supportive of establishing a deceased donor liver and kidney transplant program in Rajasthan.
