Catch them and watch them grow - an experience with students of Class V at Oakridge International School, Hyderabad

Updated on Friday, December 23, 2016
  • On 23rd December 2016, Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director of MOHAN Foundation was invited by the teachers of Oakridge School, Hyderabad, to enlighten their fifth class students on organ donation.  They wanted to make exhibits on organ donation for their upcoming exhibition in the school.

While adults have preconceived notions about whether children will receive a topic like organ donation in all its seriousness, Mrs. Raghuram was in for a surprise.  As she entered the class, she enquired, "children, how much do you know about organ donation?"  They immediately said, "We have researched everything about brain death and organ donation, and showed their note books, which had references to all they gathered from MOHAN Foundation's website and other related websites.

The students said, coma and brain death are not the same, and also listed all the organs that can be donated after brain death.  One girl student said, "madam, if you can take all these organs, why don't you take blood from the body?".  Interesting thought.

The 20 odd students took the organ donation brochure and donor card  and said they would talk to their parents about it.  One of the students also asked for Mrs. Raghuram's phone number, so that he could call her should he have any questions while preparing for the exhibition.

Who said children are not ready for this cause?
