Updated on Monday, July 25, 2016
  • After an impactful session for the teachers at Aravali International School, Faridabad, MOHAN Foundation was invited again to conduct awareness sessions for the students of classes IX -XII on July 22, 2016. The talks were coordinated and organized by Ms.Hemagni, HR Manager of the school. The sessions were taken by Ms. Mareena Thomas, Programmer Officer Delhi- NCR and Ms.Chaitnaya Jonker Transplant Coordinator. Four sessions were conducted.

The session started with the resource persons trying to understand the level of knowledge the students had regarding organ donation. While a few students seemed to have some understanding of the topic, most had little or no idea. However, many interesting queries came up during the course of the sessions. One student asked about the chances of rejection of an organ after transplantation. Ms. Mareena clarified that when an organ for transplantation is chosen several tests are done to see the compatibility of the same in the recipients body. Utmost care is taken to ensure the compatibility a foreign organ in a recipient's body, still there are cases when organs get rejected. Mareena also added on how organ transplantation is a costly affair with the cost of transplantation and lifelong medication of immuno-suppressants.

Taking from figures shown on brain death cases from road traffic accidents a student asked on the technicalities for organ donation that would arise in a medico legal case. Ms. Chaitanya Jonker shared her experience dealing with a case where the accident took place in Delhi but the patient was declared brain dead in a hospital in Gurgaon. She explained how since systems are not yet in place it was difficult to coordinate and get everything done so that the body is handed over to the family on time. She however shared that despite all the difficulties in medico legal cases, most families have  been very understanding and cooperative in supporting the organ donation that would give someone a new lease of life.

At the end of the sessions, the team also shared how the students can contribute to the cause through volunteer program of MOHAN Foundation - Angels of Change. The training program will give the opportunity to understand the cause in depth by meeting donor and recipient families, renowned transplant surgeons and thereby equipping them to take their own awareness sessions on organ donation. Students were also requested to talk about the cause and share their experience when they go back home.

Around 640 children attended the four sessions.
