Awareness program for the future doctors at Tagore Medical College and Hospital, Chennai

  • Department of Anatomy, Tagore Medical College and Hospital (TMCH) in collaboration with the Medical Education Unit organized  a Continuing Medical Education (CME) on “Celebrating the Gift of Life - Awareness on Organ Donation” on May 30, 2022. Around 135 medical students and faculty members attended the session. Dr Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer and Ms Preetha Baskar, Project Executive from MOHAN Foundation were deputed to conduct the CME.

     

    The awareness program commenced with the welcome address and special notes from Dr Kumudha Lingaraj, Dean, TMCH and Dr D H Gopalan, Vice Principal and HoD, Department of Anatomy, TMCH and Prof. Dr. Karunanidhi, Medical superintendent.

     

    Activities by students :

     

    A short film directed by the medical students was screened. The video really captured the value of donation. It was a fun video with strong information on organ donation.

     

    This was followed by a role play by the students. It  highlighted the myths in society about organ donation in such a way that everyone enjoyed it and understood the importance of organ donation.

     

    Students created different posters on organ donation and displayed it as a part of an art competition. This was judged by Dr Hemal and Ms Preetha. Marks were awarded to the posters based on their creativity and their explanation towards their poster.

     

    CME:

     

    Ms Preetha started out the next session with a video and a talk on the basic Concepts of Organ Donation. She briefed the students  on the why, how, when and which organs and tissues can be donated. She narrated the story of a donor and a recipient. She additionally dispelled the myths and facts as well as  explained the the process of registration as organ donor.  A video explaining brain stem death was screened.

     

    The next session was conducted by Dr Hemal. To give the students an idea on how popular movies can wrongly depict the concepts organ donation, a quiz based on  Tamil movies was conducted. The questions that followed were on the basics of organ donation. Students actively participated  in this quiz and answered all the questions of the quiz.

     

    Dr  Hemal also explained a few case studies of counseling during a deceased donation done by staff of MOHAN Foundation. The students learnt about the difficult situations faced by grief counselors and how the cases were resolved.

     

    The CME ended with a prize distribution  of the poster and essay competition. Vote of thanks was proposed by the students and the program ended with a National Anthem.
