Awareness Session on Organ Donation at Eye OPD, JNIMS

  • On February 18, 2026, MOHAN Foundation, in association with the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, conducted an awareness session on organ donation at the Eye OPD, JNIMS, as part of its ongoing public education and outreach initiatives. The session was led by Ms. Moirangthem Priya Devi along with Mr. Elangbam Paringanba Singh, Program Executives, MOHAN Foundation.

     

    Ms. Priya commenced the session by introducing the team and providing a comprehensive overview of organ donation. She explained the organs that can be donated and clearly differentiated between living and deceased donation. She highlighted the life-saving significance of organ transplantation for individuals suffering from end-stage organ failure. She further emphasized that a single deceased donor has the potential to save up to eight lives, thereby underscoring the far-reaching and transformative impact of organ donation on society.

     

    Ms. Priya also outlined the key provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), reiterating that commercial dealings in human organs constitute a punishable offence under the law. In addition, she explained the procedure for pledging organs, detailing the steps through which individuals may formally register as organ donors. She stressed the importance of communicating one’s decision to family members to ensure that the donor’s wishes are respected and honoured.

     

    To reinforce the key messages shared during the session, informational brochures on organ donation were distributed to the participants. Approximately 20 individuals gained a better understanding and valuable knowledge about the importance and process of organ donation.
