Role of Police in Deceased Organ donation – mass awareness session at Tamil Nadu Police Academy, Omanacherry

  • MOHAN Foundation was invited for an awareness program on Deceased Organ Donation at the  Tamil Nadu Police Academy, Omancherry, Kanchipuram District. The training was done on 12th July 2017 at 11 am, 810 Special Sub-inspectors and Deputy Superintendent of Police under training police personnel from all over Tamil Nadu attended the session. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Mr. Siva Shankar and Mr.Jayaprakash represented MOHAN Foundation.  The talk was part of a two-month course.

     

    Mr. A. Armugasamy, IPS welcomed and introduced the topic and MOHAN Foundation to the audience.  A pre-survey was conducted to test their basic knowledge of organ donation. Mr. Siva Shankar gave a presentation on Concepts of Organ Donation.

     

    The points discussed were:

    1. MOHAN Foundation
    2. Organs and tissues that can be donated
    3. When, Why, Who can donate organs
    4. Difference between Brain Death and Coma
    5. What is a Donor Card

     

    Mr. Siva Shankar kept the session very interactive with Q&A for the audience.

    The second session was about the Role of Police on Organ Donation taken by  Dr. Hemal Kanvinde.  An Introduction to Law and government orders and the procedure followed in the medico-legal case for organ donation was explained. She explained the importance of six hours between apneas testing and the Government Orders that define their role during organ donation clearly.  She requested all the SSI to help in conducting the inquest as early as possible so that the donor family can be given the body back soon. She highlighted the importance of Traffic Police in creating a green corridor for safe and fast delivery of life-saving organ to the recipient hospital. The session was translated into Tamail by Mr. Jaiprakash.

     

    The questions asked were?

    1. What is the age limit for donation?
    2. Will the Postmortem to be done after organ donation or before that?
    3. What is the time of death?
    4. Are government nominated doctors in the team for brain death testing?
    5. Does the donor family get any benefit from the government?

     

    Ms Kiruthiga and Mr K. Kesavan of the TN Police Academy organised the event.  After the orientation, the MOHAN Foundation team met  Ms. S. Thirunavukarasu, ADSP and Ms. B. Shamoondeswari, SP and thanked them for organizing the orientation for the police personnel.
