MOHAN Foundation was invited by the Tamil Nadu Health Department to participate in a series of meetings starting January 2008 to formulate Government Orders (GOs) to facilitate the Deceased Donation Programme in the state. There are now clearly laid out procedures on the declaration of brain death. The important areas that have been addressed are:
1. Declaration of brain death has been made mandatory in the three main government hospitals in Chennai.
2. The panel of doctors who can declare brain death has been expanded to include intensivists. This will go a long way in simplifying the procedure to declare brain death.
