  • Celebration of Life - An event conducted at Vijaya Nagara – 1, Hotel Katriya, Hyderabad at 7 pm on 7th April, 2013

Mohan Foundation, which began its journey in 2003, has completed 10 years in its continued endeavour at spreading the message about organ donation among a cross section of our population.

At a time when the concept of organ donation was completely unknown to public, MOHAN Foundation ventured boldly to make organ donation known to public, hospitals, media, social work groups in addition to sensitising the government on the need for a proactive participation.

Having started with one organ donation in 2002, MOHAN Foundation has succeeded in securing 27 organ donations in 2010, which is the highest in the country that year.

While the initial organ donation was just about kidneys and eyes, the latest trend is to secure multiple organs including liver, heart, lungs and heart valves, thereby giving a new lease of life to at least nine patients who are suffering with end stage organ failure.

MOHAN Foundation has made over 500 public education campaigns and trained over 78 grief counsellors and networked with over 200 hospitals in Andhra Pradesh in making organ donation happen.  Thanks to 138 organ donor families, MOHAN has facilitated the retrieval and distribution of 854 organs and tissues during these 10 years, thereby giving a new lease of life to 854 patients and helping that many number of families come out of the grip of the disease burden.  The details of organs and tissues retrieved are as follows:

    Eyes                       :  406

    Kidneys                  :  243

    Liver                      :    99

    Heart Valves           :    90

    Heart                     :   13
    Pancreas                :   02
    Lungs                     :   01

The 10th anniversary event called “Celebration of Life” celebrates the life and spirit of patients that underwent organ transplants during these 10 years. Several transplant patients shared their life changing experiences.

Several organ transplant recipients shared their experience of going through the transplant and the lives that they enjoy after the transplant, and thanked the donor families for their generosity.  Two organ donor families were felicitated by Dr. Dharma Rakshak, Director of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences.

Sri Sri Sri. Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji was the Chief Guest at the event.  He urged everyone to consider donating their relatives organs, should a death occur in the family. He lauded the efforts of MOHAN Foundation and blessed their work to continue spreading the message of organ donation.

Cine Artiste, Navdeep said that every individual should consider donating organs, and announced that he would like to pledge to donate his organs.

Launch of Swamy Narayan Life Savers Program

MOHAN Foundation  launched yet another unique program “Swamy Narayan Life Savers Program”.  Mr. K.S. Raju, Chairman of Nagarjuna Group, unveiled the logo of Swamy Narayan Life Savers Program.  He said that Nagarjuna Group will continue to do its bit in saving lives by supporting MOHAN Foundation’s efforts.

The Swamy Narayan Life Savers program is aimed at educating youth, housewives, social groups and corporates with the skills on handling medical, accident and environmental emergencies.

Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, said, “In the current scenario where road accidents are so common, it becomes very important for everyone to handle them effectively so that the “golden hour” is effectively used to save precious lives”.  Even among the educated population, this knowledge is unavailable, and that is exactly the reason why MOHAN Foundation is launching this unique “One Day program” named, Swamy Narayan (son of Mrs Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director of MOHAN Foundation), who tragically died in a fatal road accident in January 2004.

Mrs. Raghuram said, “Nagarjuna Foundation has donated seed money of Rs. 8 Lakhs, and Dr. Soma Raju, Chairman of  Care Hospital has donated R. 1 Lakh for this program and it is our endeavour to make this program available to all by creating a large corpus fund.”

Dr. Sunil Shroff, Founder and Managing Trustee of MOHAN Foundation said, “While organ donation will continue to be our core focus and forte, the Swamy Narayan Life Savers Program will be an addition to our programs in ensuring precious lives are SAVED”.

A dance ballet on “Organ Donation” by disciples of Mrs. Rajeswari Sainath, her daughter Vyshnavi Sainath and group was performed.
