Awareness programme on organ donation conducted at NCC, Dhanamanjuri (DM) College of Arts, Thangmeiband, Imphal

  • On January 8, 2023, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness programme on organ donation for the National Cadet Corps at NCC, Dhanamanjuri College of Arts, Imphal. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation was the speaker and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Co-ordinator, MOHAN Foundation accompanied her.

     

    The session was coordinated by Mr. Khelen Singh, Care Taker Officer, NCC, DM College of Arts, Imphal. The participants were cadets from different batches of the college.

     

    The MOHAN Foundation team was welcomed by the students. Ms. Monica began the session by asking participants about their understanding of organ donation and transplantation. She continued the session by introducing the MOHAN Foundation, its objectives, and its visions.

     

    The presentation began with a brief overview of living kidney transplantation happening in the state of Manipur. Ms. Monica cited the real challenges faced by the family members of the patients who do not have a donor but are enrolled in the organ transplant waiting list and hoping for a miracle to happen. Cadets were explained the scenario of organ donation, the demand and supply status, the issues of organ trading in India, and the way to curb this practise. She also shared the difference between brain death and natural death, the myths and facts of organ donation, and the importance of family consent in organ donation.

     

    The session was very interactive where participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and posed multiple queries. To name a few:

     

    • Minimum age to be an organ donor
    • selection criteria for recipients.
    • process of organ allocation.
    • Is it possible to donate other organs even though only one particular organ was chosen at the time of pledging?
    • Viability of organs after retrieval
    • What will be the alternative option if the donor’s family consents but fails to proceed with the donation process due to other medical problems?
    • The process to follow if someone wants to pledge for organ donation

     

    After the session, 8 participants pledged for organ donation and the rest wanted to discuss with their families and friends before taking the decision to sign up for organ donation.

     

    Close to 40 participants attended the session.
