Awareness Session on Organ Donation at the Urology OPD, AIIMS-Rishikesh

  • On February 24, 2026, the Division of Organ Transplant at AIIMS Rishikesh, in collaboration with the Rishikesh Eye Bank, AIIMS Rishikesh, and MOHAN Foundation, conducted an organ donation awareness session in the Urology OPD waiting area.

     

    The session was led by Mr. Arun Sharma, Program Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Uttarakhand, and Mr. Alok Rana, Technician, Rishikesh Eye Bank, AIIMS Rishikesh. It was attended by patient attendants, residents, nursing staff, and support staff, including bearers and housekeeping personnel, from the Department of Urology.

     

    Mr. Arun Sharma began with an introduction to MOHAN Foundation, outlining its mission, vision, and key initiatives in the field of organ donation and transplantation. He delivered a detailed presentation covering eligibility criteria for organ donation, living and deceased donation, the concept of brain death and how it differs from coma, eye and skin donation procedures, an overview of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, living kidney transplantation facilities at AIIMS Rishikesh, and common myths and facts related to organ donation.

     

    He highlighted the urgent need for increased organ donation in India and encouraged participants to initiate informed conversations with their families, friends, and colleagues to promote awareness and acceptance.

     

    Mr. Alok Rana then introduced the Eye Bank at AIIMS Rishikesh and elaborated on the importance of eye donation. He explained the process of corneal donation and its role in restoring vision and improving quality of life. He also briefed participants on corneal retrieval and transplantation procedures, along with the support services provided by the Eye Bank.

     

    The session was well received, with participants appreciating the collaborative efforts of AIIMS Rishikesh and MOHAN Foundation. Many expressed their willingness to spread awareness within their communities.

     

    Approximately 60 individuals attended the session, and one participant pledged to donate their organs during the programme.
