Pramod Mahajan a 67-year-old farmer who is an organ donor, reached the city on the second day of his 100-day motorcycle tour across the country to spread awareness about organ donation. Mahajan, who hails from Sangli, began his tour from Pune on Sunday and plans to cover at least 10,000 km across the country. If all goes well, he would like to put 15,000 km behind him.

In a rare instance in Mumbai last month, the organs of a 59-year-old brain-dead patient, that were harvested and transplanted, failed in all the three recipients. One of them, a 32-year-old being treated for renal failure, died within 48 hours while the recipient of the other kidney, a 60-year-old, died within a fortnight. The recipient of the liver, a 73-year-old woman, had to undergo a second transplant operation soon after.
In an encouraging example of organ and tissue donation, a family from Kharghar donated the bones of their loved one, apart from her corneas and skin. For Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), which houses the country’s oldest and city’s lone tissue bank, it was only the third such donation since 2016.
Going a step ahead of the promise the Cardiological Society of India’s Vidarbha chapter (CSI VC) had made in September last year, eleven children as young as three months to ten years underwent free heart surgeries. President Dr Sunil Washimkar had pledged that he and his team would perform ten free surgeries.

The GAVS Dream Runners Half Marathon (DRHM) 2018 held in the city on Sunday saw more than 4,000 runners participating in the event. The 7th edition of the half marathon was held with the theme ‘Run, so they can walk’ by Dream Runners.
