A 15-year old teen from Atlanta, whose hopes of a heart transplant were initially dashed because of non compliance, finally underwent the surgery.

Anthony Stokes was initially denied a place on the heart transplant waiting list after the hospital claimed that he had a history of non compliance, which meant that the doctors had doubts whether he will take his medicine or go to follow-up appointments.

However the family claimed that the reason why Anthonys name was rejected was because of his low grades and a brush with the law when he took part in a brawl to protect his younger brother.

After the family publicly complained that the rejection was unfair, civil rights groups got involved while Anthonys mother, Melencia Hamilton, gave a number of interviews to Atlanta television stations. The hospital finally reversed its decision with Anthony undergoing a successful transplant surgery and is now recovering in the intensive care unit of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
