The Rajiv
Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), Chennai, Department of Nephrology
celebrated a milestone on 30
th January 2013 - the completion of
100 deceased donor kidney transplantations. Dr. V S Vijay, Minister for Health
& Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu was the chief guest at a
function held at the Seminar Hall, Madras Medical College to mark this
milestone. The function was presided over by Dr. V Kanagasabai, Dean, Madras
Medical College. Dr. Nandhini, Vice Principal, Madras Medical College and Dr.
Sivasubramanian, Deputy Superintendent were also present on the dais.

Dr.
Gopalakrishnan, Professor and Head of the Dept. of Nephrology, RGGGH thanked
the pioneers who started the transplant unit at the hospital. The first live
related kidney transplant was done in RGGGH in 1987 and the first deceased
donor kidney transplant in 1996. He also thanked the transplant team for their
coordination and cooperation.
Dr. V S
Vijay, Minister for Health & Family Welfare, proudly announced that Tamil
Nadu was the leader in deceased organ
donation and transplantation in the country. He expressed his deep gratitude to
the donor families who saved many lives by consenting to donate the organs of
their loved ones who had passed on. He honoured the pioneers who had surmounted
many challenges to make kidney transplants a reality in a government hospital.
He thanked the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. J. Jayalalithaa for announcing
insurance coverage for patients with kidney failure to avail better health
care. He expressed his appreciation to MOHAN Foundation’s transplant coordinators
for their voluntary service at RGGGH to coordinate deceased organ donation and
transplantation.
Dr. V Kanagasabai, Dean honoured the state convenor of
the Cadaver Transplant Programme, Dr. J. Amalorpavanathan, Dr. Sunil Shroff,
Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation, the HODs of various departments associated
with the transplant programme and the transplant coordinators of MOHAN
Foundation for their work towards helping RGGGH achieve this momentous
milestone.
