Swarna's Organs Successfully Transplanted on Three Recipients
December 28, 2011
20-year old Swarna Jaswant's organs were successfully transplanted on three recipients.
This second year student of Vogue Institute of Fashion Technology,
Doddaballapur, was declared brain-dead on December 23 at Columbia Asia
Hospital, after a fall from the college terrace on December 14. Swarna’s parents decided to donate their daughter’s organs. Swarna's mother said, "We got a message from the doctors in the morning. We’ve decided to see
our daughter in others and will donate her body parts. By doing so, we
would try to make up for my daughter’s loss.”
The Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation (ZCCK) did the entire co-ordination with the donor’s hospital and recipients’ hospitals. ZCCK counsellor said, "The entire cadaver transplantation went off smoothly
since the donor’s family readily agreed to organ retrieval and gave
enough time for the doctors to harvest and transplant the organs
successfully."
Swarna's liver was transplanted on a patient at BGS Global Hospital. One
of her kidney was transplanted to a patient at Manipal Hospital and the other on a patient at St
John’s Medical Hospital. The heart valves were harvested and taken
to the Narayana Hrudayalaya, where they will be preserved and used later when required. The corneas were retrieved and taken to the Lions Eye Bank. Her heart was retained, since there was no recipient available.
