The wait for a donor was finally over for Matthew Green as he underwent a successful heart transplant surgery early this month after surviving without a heart for two years.

Green, 42, became the first Briton to be fitted with an artificial heart in 2011 as he embarked on a long wait for a donor.

The pharmaceutical consultant was suffering from Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) that necessitated a heart transplant surgery but without any available donor, he was fitted with a СplasticТ heart, a portable battery-powered pump that was attached by tubes to his chest and had to be carried around in a bag.

Green, who underwent the surgery at the Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire and is expected to be discharged soon, thanked the donorТs family for giving him a third chance at life. УI feel incredibly lucky that I have been given a third lease of life as a result of my heart transplant. ItТs hard to put into words the gratitude I feel to my donor and their family. They have helped me turn my life around againФ, he said.
