Five-Day Peer Educators Program on Organ Donation for Sri Devi Women’s Engineering College Students, Hyderabad

  • MOHAN Foundation was requested by Sri. Bandhakavi Subba Rao to conduct awareness programs as a part of summer internship for their first year MBA students and to learn about different organizations that are working for organ & tissue donation in Hyderabad from April 20 to 25 April, 2015.

     

    The students were provided with information brochures, activity reports of MOHAN Foundation and donor cards. The following are the areas these internees were exposed for a full-fledged understanding of organ & tissue donation for five days.

     

    Day One:

    Dr. Koti Reddy of MOHAN Foundation gave an exclusive presentation about the importance of deceased organ donation, religious and cultural barriers involved with organ donation & eye donation, benefits of transplantation, T.H.O 1994 Act, concept of brain death and myths surrounding organ donation.

     

    Day Two:

    Discussion with the students on building strategies for promoting organ donation and the role of MOHAN Foundation worldwide. The interns came up with lot of suggestions on promoting organ donation and were willing volunteer in our activities.

     

    Day Three:

    Visit to the Jeevandan office for knowing the role of government in the area of organ donation and its contribution to promote organ donation in association with MOHAN Foundation.

     

    Day Four:

    Students were taken to the transplant coordinators training program to get an understanding of the role of transplant coordinators in several hospitals.

     

    Day Five:

    Students attended the CME on Brain Death at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences for a better understanding of Brain Death.

     

    Students were really motivated during the entire period and came up with a lot of questions on the technical aspects of organ donation, advantages of deceased organ donation, requirement and availability of organs for ill patients and legal aspects involved in organ donation.

     

    We thank the Sri. Bandhakavi Subba Rao for making this innovative move on getting their students trained on organ donation and the students in turn will spread the information to the general public. We also thank all the students for their active participation and hope that this summer internship has ignited their young minds on organ donation.
