    MOHAN Foundation, Chennai, organized a talk on the Brain–structure and functions, for the transplant coordinators. Dr. Navin Jayakumar, neuro-ophthalmologist, conducted the session and explained the structure and different parts of the brain. He also explained about the different types of cranial nerves and their function with suitable examples. Inputs were given on the tests required to identify the absence of brain stem function.

     

    This program was organized as a precursor to the CME on Brain Death to be held on 1st May’10. The transplant coordinators now have a clear idea about how each part of the brain works and its role. Thus a severe injury which leads to brain stem death and the diagnosis will be well understood by the transplant coordinators. This will help the transplant coordinators to explain to the family members about the patient’s condition when approached. The transplant coordinators will be confident since they are equipped with correct information to counsel the family.
